Tony Leung and Carina Lau tie the knot in Bhutan
Posted 2008-07-2312:40:57 by akoo
If you are something beyond the regular Indianized Bhutanese who only knows about Bollywood stars, then you know that names Tony Leung and Carina Lau are pretty big in the rest of Asia. i.e China, Taiwan, Hong Kong Malaysia Singapore etc. Although the Bhutanese press doesn't seem to have gotten a wind of it, it appears that the two of them got married in Bhutan this past Monday. Here are some images below, siphoned off Strait Times(Singapore) website. The weeding was attended by quite a few members of who is who of Hong Kong's film industry. Some of the big names include director Wong Kar Wai and actress Lin Ching-hsia.

Various other images of Tony and Carina from Yahoo news.

bHUTAN on the way to almost-perfect democracy
Democracy is a government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the people. That is why we all vote. Voting is an important and integral process for an effective democracy. We vote for political candidates. We vote for political parties. The members of the National Assembly vote to choose the Speaker. They vote to make policies and decisions. They vote to make laws and amendments to the constitution. The members of the National Council vote to see the bills passed by the National Assembly are constitutional or not. They vote to see whether the laws and amendments of the Constitution go against the fundamentals rights of the people or not. And we all vote for our rights as a citizen of this country. We all vote for democracy.

Bhutanese rock video.
I just came across this on the video on youtube and I was really like impressed with the production quality of the video as well as the song itself. What I really like about this video is how the band members are dressed like anyother rock band members anywhere else in the world. In order words they don't make any cheap attempt to inject Bhutanese culture by wearing ghos and kiras while singing a western style song. I think if anyone in Bhutan is thinking of putting out rock/pop videos this is the way to go ahead. On the other hand if they are doing traditional Bhutanese songs they should do it wearing ghos and kiras taking care to make sure their songs are not borrowing too much from bollywood. Enough on the commentry, roll the video and enjoy...

Tyranny of democracy.
Demos Kratos means rule by the people. Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people. Democracy is the rule of the majority. It has its advantages over autocratic rule but like every coin has two sides, it is not without disadvantages. Thomas Jefferson had rightly pointed out the hazard of majority rule when he said, I quote, “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." The one pervading evil of democracy is the tyranny of the majority. I see a glimpse of such a situation developing in our newly embraced democracy.

National Assembly's thoughtless ban on laptops makes the international press.
Today I can't seem to get my daily dose of Bhutan related news without coming across another story of how some of those enlightened souls at the National Assembly banned laptops. While the story has yet to make it's way to the Bhutanese media, it seems to be all over the international media with the likes of reuters and conde nast portfolio covering it. Technology related issues such as PC magazine and BIOS which would never have any reason to cover Bhutan otherwise, have been dumbfounded enough to cover this story. Here's what BIOS magazine of UK has to say about about it.

19th June, 2008 RCSC announces executive appointments, transfers and retirements of senior civil servants.
We the people of Bhutan hardly get the glimpse of our Fourth King; hardly had we any news on him. And when we do on the television, there are reasons why our His Majesty the Fourth King looks sad these days. The first thing that could ever happen was the “Democratic Bhutan”. There will be peace in every corner of the country but will there be happiness amongst the people? Our Bhutan is really at doom one way or the other. That’s why our fourth King has lost the shines of his face, the shines of our country’s gem. We the people of Bhutan can never make him happy, the happiness of our king that’s long blown away with the wind. Our fourth King will remain sad for the rest of his life, because no one can make him happy. The peaceful country is long gone, when our faith of the country was handed over to the people of Bhutan. In fact, we the people are not happy like our fourth King with the recent development of appointments and transfer of senior civil servant, a point where even the ACC & RAA have failed to report and evaluate the procedures. Therefore, we place our sincere faith & loyalty on His Majesty the Fifth Druk Gyelpo and the New Government DPT to view into following the lapses of RCSE:

 MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE BILL
As I observed the latest deliberations regarding "motion of no confidence bill" in our National Assembly, I am surprised so many of our honored members seem to have a shallow understanding about the basic principles of democracy, and especially in our case, about constitutional monarchy. And it is worrying to see that some of our elected ministers have already become more of politicians than being statesmen and leaders.
